Taikoo Place in the business district of Hong Kong, China, is an urban oasis off ering visitors myriad pathways of exploration to fitness and wellness centers, restaurants, and sweeping views of the city, across two buildings, a ground-level garden, and through weaving walkways. Designers from Speirs Major Light Architecture (SMLA) delivered a holistic approach to the project— recognizing that the complex needed to blend seamlessly with its surroundings while simultaneously standing out amidst existing urban “grey” light.
The scope of the fi rm’s work included the creation of the lighting master plan, lighting for the lobbies of the new tower buildings Taikoo One and Taikoo Two, walkways, and all existing and new public spaces. To get it right, SMLA Senior Partner and CEO Keith Bradshaw said designers considered “multiple dimensions, orchestrating the views and the experience for each route, transition, and space, both inside and outside.”

An eye-catching luminous “cloud” ceiling in the lobby of Taikoo Two draws visitors closer.

Pathways enclosed in mullion-free glass have perforated, luminous ceilings. Designers were careful to manage glare so that the visual of the surrounding landscape remains unimpeded from within walkways.

A base of silvery light in the gardens emulates moonlight; combined with contrasting warm highlights, the design emphasizes surrounding textures of foliage and provides guests with an experience unique to an after-hours stroll.
