The lighting designer at Borealis Lighting Studio at BR+A zeroes in on the advantages of collaboration and the importance of mastering new technology.

Why lighting?

Ask an EP: Tzu-Hao KuoLighting is essential to any space as it can completely transform its atmosphere without altering the objects or furniture present. I am fascinated by the power of lighting to change the mood and feel of a space—whether it’s a warm and cozy feeling for a residential project or a bright and energetic atmosphere for a commercial space. The right lighting design can highlight architectural features, create a sense of depth, and even improve peoples’ well-being.

Favorite project?

The OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute in Peoria, IL, holds a special place in my heart as it was my first project after graduating, and it allowed me to acquire the fundamental tools for lighting design. Through this project, I gained valuable experience in using software and familiarized myself with energy codes, which have become indispensable skills in my career.

Best part of your job?

I am currently part of a design studio in a consulting engineering firm, where we focus equally on design and engineering tasks. What sets my company apart is that we have various departments, including electrical, mechanical, fire protection, plumbing and more. The cross-disciplinary interactions with other departments provide valuable insights and lead to better integration of systems and components in our projects.

Biggest obstacle you’ve encountered?

One of the major hurdles I’ve faced is the lack of experience in a new industry. Starting fresh and trying to grasp all the assigned tasks was challenging, and feeling like you’re on top of things can be daunting, especially when you’re new and unsure about how things work. I’m lucky to have a patient supervisor and supportive colleagues, who shared their experiences and gave me valuable tips to overcome this obstacle.

Most important thing for the future of the lighting industry?

Staying up-to-date with the latest technology. The rapid evolution of technology demands an ongoing commitment to learning and mastering new tools. It’s important to keep up with new tools such as building information modeling (BIM), the latest lighting analysis software and parametric tools. By continuously improving and expanding one’s skill set, it’s possible to stay competitive an d keep pace with the industry’s developments.

Dream collaboration?

Working with Studio Drift—a Dutch artist collective known for creating breathtaking installations that combine technology, art and nature. Their work has consistently captured my imagination and inspired me to explore new ideas in lighting design. The opportunity to collaborate with such a visionary group of artists would allow me to push the boundaries of what’s possible with light and create truly immersive experiences for viewers. I would relish the opportunity to contribute my skills and expertise to their projects and learn from their innovative approach to art and technology. To me, there is no greater reward than the chance to be part of a team creating something truly extraordinary.
