Salutogenesis is a term coined to describe a model for socio-environmental influences on health and refers to an approach towards wellness focusing on health that is different from pathogenesis that focuses on diseases and illness. The salutogenic theory essentially posits that a strong ‘sense of coherence’ is an integral part of the natural healing process involving three attributes, namely, comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness. This lecture demonstrates how the dynamics of health, experience, and performance can be integrated with lighting design using salutogenic concepts and argues that the lighting industry, which is currently dominated by the pathogenic model of health, can take a great deal more from this theory.
