Along Compton Creek, a once-vacant half-acre lot has become a place for gathering, recreation and community connection. Alondra Gateway Park brings long-awaited public investment to an area with limited access to green space, creating a compact but highly active civic space rooted in the culture and identity of its neighborhood.
First envisioned in 2008 as part of the Compton Creek Garden Park Master Plan, the park was designed by Studio-MLA with the community at the center. Residents, local businesses and equestrian groups, including the Compton Cowboys, helped shape a space that serves families, walkers, cyclists and riders alike. A nature-inspired playground, California native plantings, picnic and exercise areas, a community-made mosaic and central plaza give the half-acre site a variety of ways to gather and connect.
“It’s a very small site, just a half acre, but we packed a lot into this space,” says Mike Hee, PLA, Technical Director at Studio-MLA. “There are open community areas, picnic zones, a playground, planting areas, and stormwater functions.”

Designing for Connection
The design reflects more than the site’s physical constraints. For a neighborhood that has experienced decades of underinvestment and environmental challenges, creating a welcoming and inclusive public space was central to the project.
Landscape Forms furnishings help establish a cohesive public realm throughout the park. MultipliCITY tables and benches provide places to gather, while Bola bike racks and Select recycling systems support the park’s active, everyday use. Consistent finishes across the elements reinforce a unified aesthetic, while accessible table and bench configurations support the project’s emphasis on universal access.

When the Grid Isn’t an Option
Lighting presented a unique challenge. A conventional electrical connection was not feasible for the site, requiring the design team to rethink how the park could be illuminated.
The solution was LEO 360 Solar area lighting. With no need for a connection to the local electrical grid, the solar-powered system provided a way to bring lighting to the park while maintaining the design intent.
“We couldn’t get electricity to the site and had to move quickly,” Hee explains. “This project really kickstarted our thinking about using solar lighting on other sites as well.”
The project became one of the first completed installations of the solar version of LEO, demonstrating how alternative infrastructure can help expand possibilities for public spaces where traditional utilities may be difficult or costly to provide.

More Than a Half Acre
Alondra Gateway Park demonstrates how thoughtful design can turn a constrained site into a meaningful community asset. Native landscaping, shade trees, stormwater strategies and interpretive elements connect the park to its natural and cultural context, while lighting and furnishings support the everyday activities that bring the space to life.
What began as a vacant half-acre parcel is now a place where families play, neighbors gather and equestrians can stop and rest, a small park with an outsized role in its community.
