Illuminating Excellence: Advancing the Art and Science of Lighting in District of Columbia

We are the District of Columbia based section of the Illuminating Engineering Society, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to all aspects of the ART and SCIENCE of ILLUMINATION.

The District of Columbia Section was initially chartered as the Washington and Baltimore Chapter in 1927. We currently encompass Northern Virginia (from Harrisonburg to Fredericksburg), Maryland (Columbia to Frederick), and the District of Columbia.

The IES is the recognized technical authority on illumination. For over a century its objective has been to communicate information on all aspects of good lighting practice to its members, to the lighting community, and to consumers through a variety of programs, publications and services. The strength of the IES is its diversified membership consisting of: engineers, architects, designers, educators, students, contractors, distributors, utility personnel, manufacturers, and scientists, all contributing to the mission of the society: to advance knowledge and disseminate information of the improvement of the lighted environment to the benefit of society.

The IES is a forum for the exchange of ideas and information and a vehicle for its members professional development and recognition. Through its committees, with hundreds of qualified members from the lighting and user communities, the IES correlates research, investigations, and discussions to guide lighting experts and laypersons via consensus-based lighting recommendations.

Illumination Awards

The Illumination Awards program recognizes individuals for professionalism, ingenuity, and originality in lighting design based on individual merit of each entry.

Every year, submissions open the first week of January and close mid-February. Contact us at RSVP.capiesna@gmail.com or monitor your email for exact dates.

The IES Illumination Awards (IA) program recognizes individuals for professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design based on the individual merit of each entry. Judges are selected from a broad professional spectrum representing knowledge of lighting and design excellence. The judging system is entirely based on how well the lighting design meets the program criteria. The Illumination Awards program is not a competition. The IES Illumination Awards will be presented as the opening session to kick-off the 2023 Annual Conference.

Check out the Illumination Awards webpage for more information.

Projects previously submitted to the IES Illumination Awards are not eligible.

  • Anyone (except manufacturers); IES members or nonmembers (with the exclusion of IES staff and IES Board of Directors), may enter a project for an Illumination Award. Agents may also submit.
  • Registration fees are non-refundable.
  • Early Submission: Beginning of January – End of January (Fee: $200)
  • Regular Submission: Beginning of February – Mid February (Fee: $250)
  • The installation must have been completed during the 24 months preceding the January program date listed.
  • Projects may be entered only once using the IA portal. If there is no active IES section in your area, your project will still be accepted and entered for judging. All judging is conducted ‘blind’ or anonymously; judges do not know any project details at any stage of judging. The nominator must check with all parties to eliminate duplicate entries. All entries previously judged will be rejected.
  • Different areas of the same project may be submitted as separate lighting or controls project entries. Each of these entries must have its own distinguishable title and additional entry fee. Each of these entries will be judged separately.
  • Lead Lighting Designer must inform the owner and all others involved or associated in the project design, of participation in the program and that the entry may be published in LD+A. The owner’s name and location may be withheld for privacy reason.

Who is an Emerging Professional?

An Emerging Professional (EP) is an individual who is still a student, or has less than 5 years of post-graduation experience in the lighting industry.

Why do I want to become an EP?

Joining the IES as an EP has numerous advantages. It will add structure to your career development and guide you away from the career freefall that many people experience. There are many avenues you can explore to get involved, it all depends on what your goals are, and how much of your time and energy you’re willing to invest.

Social

You will be introduced to the lighting industry. From other Emerging Professionals all the way up to Industry leaders and many others in between, the opportunities for meaningful networking and the resulting possibilities are endless.

Knowledge

If you’re looking to become more knowledgeable in the lighting industry we offer courses of different levels from fundamentals up to advanced. We also offer study groups for those who want to pass their test to become Lighting Certified (LC).

Leadership

If you want to learn how to become a leader of tomorrow, becoming an EP will expose you to opportunities that you won’t typically find in your job and will accelerate your career development and make you into a stand-out employee… did we mention you will have a ton of fun along the way, and you get to keep all your newly learned skills?

Candace M. Kling
Candace M. Kling

It is fitting that we are able to honor Candace and Michael Candace M. Kling together, as they had the two most recognizable laughs in  the industry. Thankfully for those of us who knew them we were able to hear them quite often. Often overlooked is Candace’s ability to teach and mentor. Many of her one time junior employees continue to have thriving careers in lighting design. She was an amazing one on one educator, making certain that you understood the reason behind the design. And never forgetting that an important part of design is instinct and having a little fun. She also made it possible to give back. Not only encouraging but almost requiring her staff to participate in the IES and IALD.

—David Ghatan

Michael B. Klein
Michael B. Klein

Michael never claimed perfection and his eccentricsMichael B. Klein brought more attention to his world. His full head of white hair coupled with his bow ties and his eclectic combination of colors brought spontaneity and joy to all of us. And these simple yet significant ways presented a synergy of energy for all of us. And these eccentrics brought Michael to the forefront in planning and acting out the annual progress report to the IES. Only Michael could pull this off and be loved by all.
