To illuminate Light in Heaven and Earth with electric lights for The Art Institute of Chicago, designers from Schuler Shook worked closely with museum curators, conservators and exhibit designers to navigate the complexity of the 25-ft high by 16-ft wide stained glass landscape.
1. The team aimed to make the electric lighting appear as if natural light streams through the window.
2. To combat variations of translucency in the glass, designers implemented bright LEDs along with a high-transmission, white acrylic panel to obscure LED pixilation.

3. A system of traveling frames was developed to suspend the LED system within the window’s 12-in. deep encasement.
