When owner Brandon Hartmann decided to open a new cannabis dispensary in Cobourg, Canada, he wanted the shopping experience to feel organic, highlight local history, and show off, in his own words, “budding feel-good vibes in a feel-good town.”
“We created this entire store in honor of Cobourg and there are a lot of cool pieces that are a nod back to the community where I’ve lived for 27 years,” Hartmann says. In fact, the name of the business, Circa 1818, is an homage to the year Cobourg was named.
Hartmann called on sales representative STL Lighting, which specified fixtures that support a cozy, hometown feel, while remaining environmentally friendly for the cannabis product. For display cases, a flexible linear product (Xicato XFL) with a CRI above 95 renders the cannabis closest to its natural colors. Eric Teacher, specification sales at STL, chose the full-spectrum version, which has a wider spectrum of light that more closely matches sunlight. Additionally, for non-display case lighting, Teacher designed a completely black fixture with a regressed lens, which allows the lighting to blend into the black ceiling when the lights are off for a natural aesthetic.
The full-spectrum fixtures are tunable, which helps with circadian support for staff, and a wireless, app-based control system (also Xicato) allows for light levels to be maintained based on the time of day and occupancy.
