Project in Pictures: Rural Retreat

June 6, 2023

Back to nature and back to opulence are the twin selling points at the Emser Thermenhotel in the German town of Bad Ems. The team of 4a Architekten and lighting designer Licht Kunst Licht combined on the four-star hotel, which offers 84 double rooms and carries over design elements from an adjacent spa.

The nocturnal exterior appearance of the façade, underlined by the use of linear cove lighting, offers an inviting gesture through vertical illumination.

Elegant, futuristic pendants, arranged parallel to the façade at different heights above the restaurant tables, allow an uninterrupted view of the landscape. Rounded, recessed ceiling panels with surrounding cove lights playfully extend over the seating groups and stand out against the dark ceiling in opulent gold.

Ceiling coves provide intuitive orientation in the corridor areas and are complemented by downlights to guide guests comfortably through the hotel.

Integrated light lines at the head of the bed create warm indirect light along the wooden slats and provide soft ambient lighting for the room.

In the void adjacent to the façade is a geometric light art installation of suspended, filigree light rings. The metal rings convey a pleasant impression of lightness and tranquility.
