The DesignLights Consortium (DLC) has announced that the final version of Horticultural Lighting Technical Requirements Version 3.0, incorporating changes in response to stakeholder comments, is proposed to take effect March 31. Introducing a surveillance policy intended to protect the value of the DLC’s Qualified Products List (QPL) for all stakeholders, the updated document increases efficiency and establishes minimum performance baselines for LED lamps, luminaires and controls for the controlled environmental agricultural (CEA) industry. DLC Executive Director and CEO Christina Halfpenny said, “Since the DLC created the first QPL for energy-efficient horticultural lighting in 2018, the CEA industry has grown steadily, fueled by increased demand for year-round locally produced food as well as expanded legalizations of cannabis cultivation. Our [requirements] support the industry’s desire for sustainability. V3.0 is the next step in our support for energy-efficient products and practices in CEA.” Provisions to the document include:
- A 21% increase in Photosynthetic Photon Efficiency for QPL
- Requirements for reporting application information for listed products, such as product dimensions and representative images
- Product-level controllability requirements to enable additional functionality and energy savings
