Joint Standard Development Agreement Signed by the IES and IEEE

October 20, 2016

New York, October 20, 2016 — The Joint Development Agreement between the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Incorporated (IEEE) is to jointly develop a document, IEEE 3001.9 -201X / IES RP-XX-201X, Recommended Practice for the Design of Power Systems That Supply Lighting Systems in Industrial and Commercial Facilities. The development is expected to be a multi-year effort and will contain significant content and references to current IES Recommended Practice standards and include contributions from IES topical experts. The new standard will be developed under the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) process.

The purpose of the joint standard is to provide facilities engineers with a reference source detailing the fundamentals of lighting and lighting systems used in industrial and commercial power systems. This recommended practice will cover the lighting of industrial and commercial facilities. It will cover various factors and considerations that relate to lighting, and describe application techniques and controls that save energy and costs.

The process is being sponsored by the Industry Applications Society/Technical Books Coordinating Committee (IAS/TBCC) of the IEEE and the IES. The Power Systems Design IEEE 3001.9 Working Group and members of the IES will be participating on the development.

Mark Lien, Industrial Relations Manager of the IES and co-signer of the agreement, offered these observations: “Our collaboration with IEEE on this document is an exciting example of how the IES is engaging with other industries to create standards that improve the quality of our lighted environment.”

For more information about the Joint Development Agreement or if you are interested in participating in the work on the recommended practice, contact Mark Lien by email at mlien@ies.org.
