[10.6.2.12] In television, film and theater lighting: A pipe of diameter 3.1 to 6 cm (1.25 to 2 in.) suspended across the stage or studio, often on wire cable, to permit it to be raised or lowered. Lighting battens usually carry a wireway or outlet boxes with pigtails or receptacles so that luminaires hung on the batten may be connected to controlled circuits. In European practice, referred to as a barrel.
