Fellow Nomination Considerations
The grade of IES Fellow recognizes unusual distinction in the profession and shall be conferred by the IES Board of Directors after review of recommendations of the IES Board of Fellows upon a person of outstanding qualifications and experience in one of the designated areas (engineering/science, lighting design, product design or education). The nominee must have made important individual contributions to one of the above areas that are timely and reflect a lasting contribution advancing the art and/or science of illumination. The candidate shall have been in good standing as a member of the Society in Member classification for at least five (5) years preceding the nomination for this designation.
The Board of Fellows depends upon the Chief Proposer to furnish all of the necessary information requested on the Nomination Form in a concise and succinct statement of the unique qualifications of the candidate. It is essential that documented evidence of the candidate’s contributions be included. The Board of Fellows seeks to identify, from the documents submitted, areas of excellence that clearly distinguish the work of the nominee as outstanding.
The Chief Proposer is responsible for submission of the Nomination Form, selection of the other Proposers and the required References and to provide each with the proper form. He/she must be certain that each of the above are informed of the proper protocol for submission and verification of the candidate’s qualifications and that they are received by the IES office in a timely manner. Submissions not meeting the requirements or the due dates will disqualify the nominee from consideration in the year submitted. It is essential that the Chief Proposer carefully reads, understands and follows the IES guidelines for Fellow Nomination.
-
Deadline Dates
The Board of Fellows adheres strictly to the following deadline dates on which the documentation indicated must be received. March 31 – The Nomination Form to the IES office along with at least three completed Proposer forms and at least three written references.
-
Chief Proposer and Responsibilities
-
-
Qualifications
-
The Chief Proposer must be a member in good standing. No member of the Board of Directors may nominate, sponsor, provide reference for be or considered for an IES award while a member on the Board. No member of the Board of Fellows may be the Chief Proposer, Proposer or Reference.
-
Preparation of the Nomination Form
- Read the instructions of the Fellow Guide carefully before completing the Nomination Form.
- Use the current Nomination Form. Only the current form will be considered by the Board of Fellows. (see 3 F for exception)
- Confine all comments to the space allotted in the four pages of the nomination form. All entries must be typewritten.
- Be clear and exact. Verify the correctness of names, dates, patent numbers, etc. Obtain the necessary facts from the nominee if it is not available elsewhere.
- Be certain that all proposers and references can attest to the nominee’s qualification. Their submission must be prepared with the same diligence as required on the nomination form. Poorly prepared (written or hand-printed) submissions will not be considered by the Board of Fellows.
- Any questions regarding the preparation of the nomination form should be addressed to the IES Membership Department, 120 Wall Street, 17th floor, New York, NY 10005.
-
Submission of Nomination Form to the IES office.
Submit the original completed Nomination Form to the IES office.
-
-
Criteria
The criteria used by the Board of Fellows are the following:
- Individual contributions as Engineer/Scientist, Lighting Designer, Product Designer or Educator.
- Verifiable evidence of the nominee’s accomplishments.
- Confidential opinions of Fellow Proposers, Member Proposers and References qualified to judge the work of the candidate.
- Service to the IES and professional societies other than the Society.
- Total years in the profession.
- The Board of Fellows Nomination Form will be the primary basis for judging; limited additional information may be appended if it is important and of the nature that it could not be properly included in the Nomination Form.
Guidelines For Completing the Fellow Nomination Form
The Nomination Form [PDF 161KB] consists of 11 sections and each should be completely filled out. The important parts are the citation, the support and the references. The citation should state the contribution for which the candidate should be honored; the body of the nomination should spell out the contributions in specific terms; and the references should vouch for the accuracy of the nominator’s statement.
The comments below refer to specific sections of the Nomination Form.
-
Personal Data
Provide the complete name of the candidate. The candidate is required to be of member grade for 5 years. The elevation to Fellow Grade is made to active IES members; it is not made posthumously.
-
Education
The exact degree should be stated. Abbreviations of the degrees are suggested.
-
Proposed Citation
Avoid flowery phrases and use of the pronouns “his/her.” Be complete, correct, conservative and to the point. Limit 50 words. Typical citations begin with the words:
- For contributions in…
- For development in/of…
- For discovery of..
- For leadership of…
Example: [For development of advanced energy efficient fluorescent lamp and ballast lighting systems].
-
Chief Proposer
Any IES Member may be the Chief Proposer. No member of the Board of Fellows may be the Chief Proposer, Proposer or Reference.
-
Professional History
Begin with the candidate’s present occupation followed by previous experience. Indicate positions held and briefly explain responsibilities in each position. If a large portion of the candidate’s experience has been in one organization, subdivide the experience according to varying assignments within the organization. Choose the most important assignments to avoid exceeding allotted space.
Indicate the significance of the candidate’s achievement internationally, nationally and industry-wide, limiting your copy to the space allotted.
-
Individual Contributions
This award of unusual professional distinction is made to an individual for outstanding contributions in the field of illumination (engineering/science lighting design, product design or education). The Nomination Form submitted by the nominator is the only information supplied to the Board of Fellows so that it is essential that the nominee’s qualifications be clearly and succinctly established on this form. The Board of Fellows recognizes that significant contributions can be in one of the four areas within the profession. It is therefore important for the nominator to define the area of the nominee’s contributions; identify and describe the nominee’s outstanding contributions as:
- An Engineer/Scientist
- A Lighting Designer
- A Product Designer
- An Educator
-
Evidence of Technical Accomplishment – A and B
Review the candidate’s tangible evidence of accomplishments. By tangible evidence is meant items in the public domain which a proposer, reference or an evaluation committee member may seek out for the purpose of verifying the candidate’s accomplishments. In cases where there is a group effort, the candidate’s contributions must be specified.
-
IES Activities Awards, Offices Held, Committee Membership
Be thorough, providing all of the major activities and the span of the activities. List here only actual activities within the IES.
-
Non-IES Professional Activities
Awards, Professional Society memberships, Major Professional, Governmental, or International Committee Memberships, Professional Engineers License: Explain the significance of lesser-known awards. Provide information on the societies and grades of membership. Major services to other societies, technical, professional or trade should be highlighted.
-
IES Member Proposers
At least three (3) IES members who are listed on the active IES membership roster are required to serve as proposers. At least one of the proposers must be an IES fellow; the remaining sponsors must be IES members, member grade. It is recommended that an additional two be supplied in the event of any problem that may arise. The Proposer kit should be sent to each proposer and returned to the IES office prior to the deadline date. As stated earlier, the form must be typewritten in proper English with verification of the nominator’s claims. Names of proposers should be listed in alphabetical order.
No member of the Board of Directors or Board of Fellows shall act as a Proposer or Reference. The Nomination kit should contain the list of IES Fellows and the members on the Board. It is desirable that most proposers and references be selected from other than the candidate’s own organization.
-
References
At least three written references are required to endorse the nomination. At least one reference must be an IES fellow. There are no preprinted forms for this purpose. These references must be typewritten. The other references may be from a wide range of sources including IES and non-IES members from other organizations, societies and committees where the candidate has contributed time and effort. The references must relate to the candidate’s contributions in the field of illumination.
Further Suggestions for Chief Proposer
When the Chief Proposer selects the Proposers and References, he/she should forward to them a draft of the Nomination Form. The draft and the appropriate proposer form and the requirements for the references should be sent to the proposers and references, respectively. It may also help if the Candidate’s resume is also included in the package. Ask each of them to review the Nomination Form and to send it back with any amendments they feel will improve the submission.
It is recommended that two additional sponsors and references be supplied in the event of a potential problem. Be certain that their task is clearly understood and the deadline for submitting their remarks to the Board of Fellows is clearly established.
