Teachers of Lighting Workshop 2019 (TOLW) 

The TOLW is a 6-day immersion into the latest advances in lighting technology and design tools.  Attendees work on teams as well as individually, in both classroom and studio instruction.  The event is sponsored by the IES and Hubbell Lighting Solutions Center.

The purpose of the workshop is to provide concentrated instruction in design, science and technology of lighting to full time and part time academic faculty who currently teach and have responsibility for lighting education. The workshop curricula assumes some basic lighting knowledge (i.e. participation in lighting workshops, university course work).

Instruction is provided by senior lighting faculty representing academia, design, and industry. Participants will be involved each day from 8:00 a.m. at the Hubbell Lighting Solutions Center, 701 Millennium Blvd., Greenville, SC 29607, as well as at the hotel for evening sessions. Private room lodging will be in a hotel where the evening educational sessions will be held.

Note: While teaching methodology is not the main thrust, there will be a time set aside for sharing successful learning strategies and teaching approaches. Past workshop attendees have expressed that a wealth of pedagogical knowledge was gained through observation during the workshop. 

Eligibility

This intensive lighting education experience is intended for faculty (both full and part time) with major and on-going responsibility for teaching lighting in programs of:

• Interior Design • Theatre • Building Science • Architecture • Engineering • Construction/Technology • Community Colleges/Technical Schools with Design Classes

Attendees of previous workshops, who need a refresher are also eligible. The TOLW Committee will select the attendees. Those accepted will be notified in March 2019.
 

Requirements for participants:

• Participants are expected to be present throughout the workshop, attend all sessions on time and perform all assignments.
• Family members and guests cannot be accommodated.
• Personal expenses, including travel, are the responsibility of the participant.
• Some facility with geometry, algebra, trigonometry (at the level of IES document TM-1), and three dimensional drawing is expected.

Grants/Fees

• Twenty-one grants will be granted by IES to cover tuition, lodging and meals
• Attendees pay a $225 fee and their own transportation expenses

Applications Must Include the Following

• An introductory letter stating:
  • why you wish to attend
  • your faculty status, include tenure status
  • a statement of your lighting background
  • how your experience at the workshop will affect the lighting program upon your return
• Your curriculum vitae with the full history of your academic credentials
• A description of the current lighting courses at your institution
• A letter from your department head or dean. The letter must indicate clearly the extent of your institution’s commitment to lighting education.
