How They Did It: Rothko Chapel, Houston

After a chapel’s original skylight was restored, George Sexton Associates developed a louver system to gently wash its art-filled walls with daylight and earn an IES Illumination Award of Merit.

When adequate daylight is not available, a photosensor prompts concealed digital projectors to direct light to the perimeter walls and artwork via a set of suspended mirrors. Diffused daylight from the louver system enables viewers to see subtleties of the paintings’ color and shading.
